Currently, there’s a Youtube video for Jimi Hendrix’s “Valleys of Neptune.”
Predictably, Youtubers started arguing over whether Hendrix was a blues guy or a psychedelic rock guitarist. Then, as if to shut everybody up, someone piped in with: “You’re getting it all wrong. Hendrix isn’t amazing because of his acid rock or because of his blues. Hendrix was a genius because he could flawlessly blend the two.” Damn!
While I wouldn’t say Hendrix played “flawlessly,” part of his legacy is the raw spirit he brought to music. Yet, somehow, he often also played smoothly. He was like a musical blender of sorts. Hmm, it’s like he blended music into a smoothie, and it often was refreshing.
